Operating on existing infrastructure on Scotland’s West Coast and Islands1>
Robert Wynn and Sons provide their clients with marine solutions for the transportation of heavy and/or abnormal loads.
With a long and proud history of serving industry across Europe, Robert Wynn and Sons has the experience, skills and innovation to ensure our clients receive the most appropriate solution for their needs. Scheduled ferry services from the mainland operate to over 20 islands on Scotland’s West Coast, all of which have permanent and well maintained linkspans to facilitate roll-on and roll-off operations. We are confident that these linkspans can be used to support roll-on or roll-off operations for large and more difficult cargoes that cannot be carried to these locations on conventional ferry services.
The Terra Marique is a Lloyd’s classed, UK registered specialist heavy lift vessel, designed to load/offload a maximum single piece of 1200 tonnes or multiple loads up to that weight, operating on quay heights ranging from 200 mm to 5000 mm.
The integral ballasting system of 2400 tonnes per hour enables this maximum load to be rolled on or off within a 30-minute cycle and the Terra Marique’s fully integrated and adjustable hydraulic deck and ramp can be configured to ensure safe roll on / roll operations.
The Terra Marique is 80 metres in length, 16.5 meters in the beam, with a hold of 67 metres by 9 metres. The vessel is equipped with two 3508 Caterpillar diesel engines which provide power to four Jastram thrusters for manoeuvring in port.
The movement of multiple large items to the Isle of Tiree
When “Tilly the Turbine” required a replacement generator much thought was given to how the generator, large mobile cranes and other plant and equipment required to facilitate the replacement would be transported onto the Isle of Tiree. Our marine engineers established that the Terra Marique could be loaded with multiple large items, which would be able to discharge using the linkspan designed and used daily by the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry and then proceed to site via the local roads.
Following a site visit to Tiree, detailed drawings and careful scheduling, a plan was agreed for the Terra Marique to be loaded at the Port of Ayr and undertake consecutive shipments to Tiree. The operation was successfully completed and Tilly the Turbine was again providing power to the local community.
